HDR Photography, What is it? Why is it important?

HDR Photography Makes Eye-popping Images

In an earlier blog I wrote about the need to do editing to enhance the dynamic range of an image.   There is a new way to solve the dynamic range challenges of a camera lens. It’s called HDR Photography. While the end result is an photograph with outstanding dynamic range it is definitely more than just photography.

In technical terms HDR photography is a software process that takes three identical images save that each has a different exposure setting. Ideally an over exposed image, and under exposed image and a properly exposed image are used in this process.   Software reviews each image bit by bit and ultimately provides an image with optimal detail and dynamic range that is impossible to obtain even with the best camera and lens.

Three base images look like this below.

As the images show, there is more to it than just taking different sections of the image and putting them together. This is a pixel by pixel evaluation that results in much more depth of field than a camera alone can produce. Paying particular attention to the front porch you will find the detail there similar to the image on the left. The roof is also obviously a richer color (zoom detail reveals more roundness to the roof tiles as well).

Exposure Elements uses this technology for all outdoor images taken at a property. These HDR images will jump out at viewers increasing the number of people to view the property. The National Association of Realtors has published significant documentation on the importance of virtual tours to an effective property marketing strategy. Our use of HDR photography extends the Exposure Elements tour value and assures the our customers of the most interest in their property listing. Please visit our website at www.exposureelements.com or call us at 408-431-0461.
